Lovely hike. Wear good shoes.
Great hike! Not too crowded- forest for most of the hike until it opened up into the beautiful and unique inkpots. You get a mix of incline and decline throughout the whole trail, so you don’t get too tired. We went later in the day so parking wasn’t a problem, but the lot is small.
Not the best views
6/4: came around 2 pm and parking lot was empty. Most of the hike is in the trees and a little muddy in early sections. Steady incline up. The ink pots and views at the end are beautiful!
Perfect conditions! Fantastic trail. Beautiful views at the Ink pots. Well worth it ***edit*** I lost my glasses at the trail head of moose meadows. returned back after I found out that they were lost. and they are not in the parking area where they were left.. if anyone finds them hopefully you can contact me.
Parking at castle Drogo, is pay and display. For free parking, park by Dingle bridge in, but arrive early or after lunch because the car park is extremely busy during the lunchtime rush. Very uneven terrain with sharp rocks so be careful and have suitable shoes. The path is clear, with plenty of signage and is easy to follow. We saw some great views over the valley, and had some lovely lunch by the river. It is possible to bypass the path by castle Drogo if you can't be asked to go up the stairs or pay entry. We stopped at fingle bridge inn before the walk for a pint and some chips and it was gorgeous, so we'd highly recommend stopping there for a quick refuel or a nice dinner/lunch after.
Pub at halfway is incredible with the river
Some pools to navigate around. Trial remains wide and easy to trek. Stopped at mile 1.5.
Enjoyed this walk, great for a hot day as quite shaded. A fair few descents and inclines some of which ere stepped. Found Fisherman's path quite hard as there are a couple of tricky bits but manageable. Lovely refreshments at Fingle Bridge Inn.
Very beautiful trail.
Amazing views, would recommend.
Make sure you go left as soon as you get on the path. Sharp point? I believe the view point is called. Amazing views of the valley. 10/10
Really nice walk, really pretty views. Little bit of mud, but we did it in trainers and were fine! Not too difficult, with a lovely pub halfway! Also there are some pretty ponies to look out for :)
A mix of mud, snow, slush, ice and dry sections. You don't need spikes for the entire trail, but a few steep sections after the Johnston Canyon Trail junction make it worth bringing them. The ink pots are so gorgeous, and there was a lot of bubbly activity in them today. Not too busy. **Due to the closure of the 1A, access the trailhead by driving on Highway 1 and take the 93 exit at Castle Junction. Turn right on the 1A and look for the signs for Moose Meadows.

rivers, rocks, bebe cows
Definitely go left for the easier route! Amazing though and loves the little stop for a pint at Fingle Bridge inn
Parking lot was completely empty at 11 am on a Sunday. The majority of the trail was icy and cleats were a must. More people were on the upper portion of the trail, coming from Johnston Canyon. Beautiful weather and great views at Ink Pots.
Perfect riverside pub half way through the walk. Super dog friendly although there are some very steep steps which small dogs will need carrying up. National trust owned and parking at the start is a little steep if not a national trust member.
Best place I've ate a banana. Fire walk, slippy so get those crampons at hand people, walk from upper falls is very forest like but the end is totally worth it.
Amazing day on Sunday afternoon. Trail up to Ink Pots was great! Spikes a must this time of year! Hiked in low cut shoes and my feet came back dry. 4 hours for Ink Pots loop from Johnson Canyon parking lot
Lovely trail but can get pretty muddy if it’s been raining. Trees obscuring most of the castle from trail but you can definitely still see it and great views of the gorge regardless!
Fairly packed snow, quiet hike
No bathrooms at this trail head, so stop up the road at the Johnston Canyon parking lot if you need one :) Trail is easy to follow and quite peaceful. We saw some snowed in tracks near the trail head that looked cougar-esque, so good to be vigilant. Wasn’t particularly icy today because of the fresh snow and colder temperatures. A fairly accessible hike for those with good stamina
Lovely day. Packed trail. Spikes nice. Definitely don’t need snowshoes. Had a great hike!
Amazing!
National Trust car park - so bring your card if a member!
Top notch trail, with a pub basically half-way, what more can you want! Watch out for the steep incline after the bevs! Caught me out!
Trail was packed snow. Cloudy day with light snow falling at the ink pots. Microspikes
Great day! Packed trail, not busy at all until the junction from Johnston Canyon, but even then, not too bad. Snowing and windy at the ink pots, but beautiful nonetheless!
Great hike! Lots of up but nothing tough! Beautiful destination - Ink Pots!
Parked at Fingle Bridge for free. I headed straight over the bridge and turned right to complete my circular walk. The walk is a nice mix of Riverside, woodland and walking around the top of the gorge in which you can get some nice views. I stopped off at Hunters Tor, Castle Drogo (National Trust) for a drink and Sharp Tor. Lots of birds en route and even some deer. I finished my stop back at The Fingle Bridge for a well deserved pint. Some sections of the walk were a little steep and muddy but all in all, a relatively easy walk.
the high side of the route (same side as castle) Was stunning in the early afternoon sun. After Fingles bridge the
Parking is £6 for the day, Valley is stunning when the sun is at a low angle
Fantastic views accompanied by the roar of the river
Lovely walk, really enjoyed the views. We started at the end at Fingle Bridge, so we had the steep incline first.
Completed this trail yesterday in dry weather, however there has been a lot of rain recently. There were large parts of the trail that were muddy and slippery but manageable in waterproof hiking boots. We were very grateful for our hiking poles as there are some bits of the trail that are rocky and uneven. My phone tracked this at about 800ft elevation gain, so not sure what is more accurate. Overall enjoyable, I imagine better in the summer when the ground is dry. The bits by the river would be lovely for a picnic on a hot day
Nice winter hike, although the alltrails map ends at a weird spot, just in the middle of the trail. If you keep going another 2 km down an easy downhill section, you make it to the inkblots pond, which is a beautiful scenic spot to end!
Well packed, spikes helpful but snowshoes not necessary.
Mostly easy and no real climbs. Very waterlogged and some of the path flooded down by the river this time. Rewarded with a stunning sunset after the rain.
really varied scenery, stunning views & nature
Nice walk along the river then brilliant views across the valley. Some horses at the top. We had dogs off most of the way.
Wasn’t too slippery or muddy. Complete it in around 1hr 30mins. A bit of uphill at the end but it’s gradual.
Easy to follow and navigate, only really looked at the map a handful of times to see how far we had to go. Pretty easy going and very beautiful views. Recommend using some form of microspikes if doing in the winter.
Very beautiful with Autumn colours and pretty, easy to moderate walking.
Perfect views, dodgy trail. The map took me to an uncrossable river and had to take a 45 minute detour through bushes and bogs. The views made this trip worth it. Good footwear is a must
Much longer than expected and quite an incline. Make sure to pack a good meal to enjoy once getting to the inkpots! Beautiful views of mountains and benches there to sit and enjoy.
Amazing walk
Went a bit wrong and walked down a steep rocky slope to meet the path. Forestry works shut Fisherman’s Path.
Beautiful walk, stunning views at the top. Took a slight detour to Hunters Tor as spectacular view is available. Parked at Fingley bridge pub so could finish with a deserved drink.
