History of SIG SG 542 (Assault Rifle Model 542)
The SG 542 is an improved version of the SG 540 series fixed stock rifles, except that it is chambered to fire the 7.62x51mm NATO cartridge. While the system was an adequate weapon on its own, it was never as favored by export orders as the SG540 5.56mm.
The SG540 series as a whole is a direct attempt to improve upon the previous SG530, simplifying the bolt mechanism and making the new series of guns less expensive to manufacture and therefore more tax responsible in the commercial market.
The SG542 is fired from a detachable straight magazine of 20 or 30 rounds. Muzzle velocity is specified at 2,690 feet per second, and a cyclic rate of fire of 650 to 800 rounds is possible.
In addition to the SG540 and SG 542, there is the SG 543, which is a shortened version of the basic SG 540 with a folding stock.
From the looks of it, the SG542 is a very traditional rifle. As a "battle rifle" it simply incorporates rifle caliber cartridges into its design, so the internal mechanisms have to be redesigned to accommodate and fire the large, powerful cartridges.
The cartridge allows engagement of targets beyond the inherent range of the 5.56mm cartridge, while also providing selective repeat fire. Attaching the scope to the upper receiver and the SG542 can be used by squad-level snipers or designated marksmen. The receiver contains all the major inner working components, including the feed mechanism as well as the trigger group. The front end is encased in a sleek casing that surrounds the top-mounted gas cylinder and low-mounted barrel assembly.
The sight is mounted on the rear of the upper receiver and at the very end of the cylinder. The barrel is sealed with a flash suppressor. The shaft is fixed and ergonomically shaped.
