When Is a License Plate Not a License Plate?

Most license plates from places outside of the Americas have no identification on them. They are just a plate with a string of letters and numbers on them. However license plates are not the only things that have a string of letters and numbers on them.

Below are some photos of things that a North American license plate collector might think are a vehicle license plate from a far-away land.

However things are not always what they seem.......

White on black two-line plate, number LOT 3808. Looks British.

Where is it from? Is it a license plate or something else?

One license plate collector thought it was from Poland, another suggested Pakistan and yet another thought Malaysia.

The Malaysia guess was pretty close.....

The photo below shows the plate's actual use.

It is an address marker for a piece of property in Brunei.

Here is another one.

White on black, a one-line plate this time, number LOT 2323.

Is this one a vehicle registration plate or is it another property marker?

The photo below shows the plate's real use.

As with the previous "LOT" plate, it is an address marker for a piece of property in Brunei.

Imagine what someone might think the smaller 2323 plate was if it showed up at a swap meet. Wow! A foreign motorcycle plate, with a neat number too!! But nope, that isn't what it is.

How about this?

A cute, little black on yellow plate, number DB 1824 BW.

Where is it from? Is it a license plate?

An Indonesian motorcycle plate maybe? They use an AA 0000 AA pattern.

Or is it something else?

The photo below shows the plate's actual use.

It is an identification marker on a billboard along railroad tracks in Germany. The "DB" almost certainly refers to Deutsche Bahn (German Rail).

Pardon the poor photo but I saw it just as the train was starting to pull out (and the window was dirty!).

Photo taken November 2010 at a railroad stop someplace between
Heidelberg and Frankfurt am Main, Germany.

How about porcelain plates?

Here are two porcelain plates with nice low numbers.

Are they vehicle registration plates or something else?

If you think about it the mounting hole positions give these away.

The photos below show these in their natural habitat.

Porcelain plates like these are a common sight in Europe. They are address markers on old (or even new) buildings.

These were both photographed in Germany.
The number 1 plate in Höchst, the number 2 plate in Frankfurt am Main.

All of the above plates are modern. How about older-looking plates?

Here is a black on white porcelain plate, number 219.

Looks old, doesn't it?

It probably is old, but is is a vehicle license plate?

The photo below shows the plate's real use.

As with the previous porcelain plates, it is an address marker for a building.

As mentioned, it probably is old. I photographed this in the altstadt (old town) of Heidelberg, Germany. This was an area that was not bombed during World War II so some of the buildings here are quite old.

This little porcelain plate has probably seen a lot of history pass under it.
