A Brief History of the (213) Area Code
California area code 213 came into effect in 1947 as one of the original three California area codes in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) along with area codes 415 and 916. Originally only covering the southern third of California, all the way from the Mexico border to the center of the coastal area. area code 213 reached into areas north of its original numbering plan area in 1950, from area code 415, starting a realignment of California's original three area codes. California's rapid increase in population, in parallel with the increased need for more phone numbers for the growing telecommunications technology industry, led to many splits from the original 213 area code. The first split occurred in 1951 with area code 714, just four years after its origination. This split gave new area code 714 San Francisco and just about all of Orange County. In 1998 area code 213 was reduced to just downtown Los Angeles, then later in 2017 was joined as an overlay with area code 323 covering areas of central Los Angeles.
